I want to assure you with all earnestness, that no writing is a waste of time, - no creative work where the feelings, the imagination, the intelligence must work. With every sentence you write, you have learned something. It has done you good. It has stretched your understanding.
~Brenda Ueland
Bloggers are afraid if we appear a faithful melancholic, someone might accuse us of trying to be Ann. We don't want to put ourselves out there too much and end up being turned on like Elizabeth. We are apprehensive when taking cooking photos lest someone think we are copying Pioneer Women. And so we lie with each timid word we tap out in rhythmic keyboard clicks. For fear of being like them, we are not ourselves.

Let me assure you, Ann is not the first melancholic who clung to Jesus for dear life and wrote to tell about it. Elizabeth is the not the original betrayed and Pioneer Woman is not the pioneer of cooking photography. These are beautiful souls using the gifts God has given them...and we, the reader, reap the benefits of their individual honesty.
So many bloggers say, "I feel like I am trying to be like {fill in the blank} because my blog colors are dark, or light, or embellished, or professionally designed." Or, "I feel like I have nothing to say that Ann, or Elizabeth, or Ree have not already said or could say better."
We all have something to say. The cloistered monks and nuns who spend large chunks of time in solitude still have something to say; they are just saying it to God rather than the world. The baby who babbles incessantly has something to say whether anyone understands his slobbery sounds or not.

If we write truthfully, if we are who we really are, each word we write is an original masterpiece. Yes, you are an original masterpiece and the truth you write belongs to you...so share it without fear or reserve.
Be who you are! Be who you were created to be!
You don't have to run multiple blogs and post daily to be a "success." If your goal is multiplicity, spare us the drivel. We would much rather read a few honest sentences than paragraph after torturous paragraph of hooey because you read somewhere you need to post at least so many words, so many times a day, so many times a week.

If you take pictures of your kitchen masterpieces because Pioneer Woman inspired you...good for you! I'm sure Ree would be the first to give you a pat on the back as she devoured your creation.
If you run a busy household with prayer and intention, share your small steps in the spirit of Elizabeth and offer a little prayer for all of us in the trenches.
When the quiet whispers of God the Father slip from your heart to your keyboard, offer a prayer of thanksgiving, that He not only inspired you, He may have even shown you the way through another timid soul.

The world wide web is big enough for each and every one of us. It can easily support the uniqueness we each bring to the flickering screen. Blogger, be who you are! Share what you have been given! Relish your individual characteristics. Each one of us has the opportunity to reflect the image and likness of God. Go forth in confidence...with true charity.

YAYYY! for this wonderful post...much needed. There are times I think "I wish I could write like Ann, JENNY : ), fill in the blanks" but that would be being dishonest to myself and depriving others of whatever gifts God has inspired me with...
ReplyDeleteOH so thankful for this post. Just today I downloaded all my recent (496) photos and realized all the backlogged post I need {WANT} to write, and felt my heart sink with the despair of "there's no way I can muster up enough creativity and originality to get this all done well"
ReplyDeleteSo an hearty THANK YOU for the encouragement this post was to my heart - and fingers. smile
Blessings!
LIB
THIS is beau.ti.ful! Thank you!!!
ReplyDeleteThis is incredible. Thank you so much for your encouragement from the Father. To believe we each don't have a voice breaks His heart. Powerful truth! Thank you!
ReplyDeleteAn inspiring post. I love writing, even though it is sporadic, because sometimes I lose my voice in a household full of children and blogging helps me find it again.
ReplyDeleteThat's a word of inspiration! I struggle with never feeling good enough to blog..who wants to hear my drivel ?? : )
ReplyDeleteThanks for the encouragement to be comfortable in who He's made us to be.
I had never heard of Ann, so I popped over there to see what she had to say. I can certainly see why anyone would be intimidated! (I'm already thoroughly intimidated by the others.) :)
ReplyDeleteMy own blog suffers from a lack of attention -- I've been on-again, off-again for the last couple of years. I even let my 4th blogaversary pass without a mention! (And all of my children's birthdays. And every meaningful event in between.) It's mostly a time thing -- once you get out of the habit of blogging regularly, it's very difficult to get back to it.
I was astonished once when I met someone who'd read my blog, and let me know she was intimidated by *me.* ME! Pul-eeze! I am definitely a work in progress, and I'd be horrified if anyone ever dropped in on my home unannounced!!!
Which is not to say that I never have anything to say that's worthwhile, of course. But I truly don't have anything to say that merits anyone feeling "less than" as a result. It's hard to get the full picture out there -- the pictures may be idyllic, but I don't photograph the children when they're screaming, for example. (And heaven forbid anyone take a pic of me when *I've* lost it!!!)
I really like your blog, by the way. You stopped by mine a couple of months ago and left me a comment and I popped right over to see yours, but for some reason my comment to you got lost in cyberspace. Or something. So thank you for that, and if I ever blog again, I hope you'll stop by and see what else I may have to say! :)
I'll do my best to keep it real ... and hope that no one is ever tricked into feeling intimidated! :) In any case, I'll certainly be back here. Thanks for a great topic.
Hi Jenny, I read this post yesterday and it gave me much food for thought, and I have come back today to say thanks for the encouragement.
ReplyDeleteI cannot be anyone but myself but are there readers out there interested in me and my musings? I sometimes wonder but I blog anyway. The funny thing about the blogging world is that you never really know the true value of what you have shared. Maybe someone read something that made a connection with them but didn't stop to comment. Only God is aware of all the good that comes from each and every one of us sharing our talents via our blogs. Does that make sense? God bless!
Sue,
ReplyDeleteI have gleaned so much wisdom from blogs over the years, but never shared that with the owners. I agree with you, I think there are many people out there that have been touched by all the wonderful blogs, but we will never know.
I'm laughing as I read this today. Do you know I've been shopping around for a new template ~ one w/clean white space and where I have a bit of control over the font so that my photos (the heart of why I blog) can pop ~ and I came to your site as inspiration? I was going to ask what template you use. Not to copy but b/c you are the type of blogger that has a "style" I like. I am gifted w/photography but not w/technical computer ability. So I am trying to navigate this blogging world (have been for 2 years) and seem to always come up short. I love what you've done w/your space. (And I love your words of wisdom!) But I barely have time to get my blogs in (even though I have a million posts swimming in my head) as is. I don't have extra time to learn the ins and outs of the technical html stuff too. Anyway...you made me smile today! And if you have any advice, feel free to email me!
ReplyDeleteAmy, I use a blogger template, the first one I think and I adjusted the width and made some changes for the colors. Let me know how I can help you and I will try my best.
